35 ton on a horizontal beam, on its own axle, with the loading ramp and the support leg already on the machine.

One operator, one machine, several sites

The useful question about a 35 ton splitter is not how much force it has. It is how many people the job needs, and how many places the machine can follow.

01  Getting there without a second vehicle

The machine is 295 kg on its own axle, and it tows behind a pickup to the yard, the field edge or the verge where the timber already is. Carrying rounds to a fixed splitter is the part of firewood work that takes the most time and shows up least clearly on paper, and leaving the splitter where it was installed is what creates it.

02  Setting up alone

A support leg with a lock clamp holds the beam while one person unhitches and levels the machine. Nothing in the set-up needs a second pair of hands, and that is what makes a roadside or field-edge position practical rather than theoretical.

Loading ramp, support leg with lock clamp, and the wedge on the beam.

03  What the ramp does, and what it does not do

The loading ramp takes the round up to the beam, so the weight leaves the operator's back at the point where it used to be worst. It does not gather the timber. Bringing rounds to the machine is still people work, and rounds longer than the 730 mm split length have to be cut to length before they go anywhere near the beam.

04  Keeping the beam fed

On a 10 second cycle the operator is either feeding the machine or waiting for it, and the difference between those two states is the real output of the day. A 2/4/6-way wedge reduces the number of passes one round needs, and the controls sit within reach of the ramp, so the next round can be on its way before the table is clear. One operator keeps the beam fed; that is a different claim from one operator clearing the site.

05  Whether moving the machine is worth it

Every site with more than one pile faces the same decision: move the machine, or move the wood. A splitter that needs two people and a trailer for each relocation tends to stay where it was first put. At 295 kg on its own axle, moving it is a decision one person can make on the morning of the job.

WHY YOU MAY CONSIDER IT

Where the timber arrives in one place and stays there, a fixed splitter does the same work. The case for this machine is a woodlot, a farm and a roadside verge that all need splitting in the same month.

OPERATING NOTES

● Keep hands clear of the beam and the wedge while the cylinder is moving.

● Stop the engine before clearing a jammed round or changing the wedge setting.

● Wear eye and hearing protection, and keep bystanders clear of the beam while the machine runs.
